Two community colleges, a business and community solutions arm, and a satellite center across central Iowa

Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) was organized in 1966 as one of fifteen community college districts in Iowa. The district is unique because it operates two separate community colleges under one umbrella along with a business and community solutions arm and a satellite center.

The district's institutions include Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls (founded 1890), Marshalltown Community College (founded 1927), Iowa Valley Business and Community Solutions, and the Iowa Valley Grinnell satellite center (established 1993). Each institution has its own audience, character, and web presence within the district umbrella.

The district serves central Iowa with one-year and two-year career-technical programs along with transferable Associate of Arts degrees. Its public web presence is the primary recruiting and information channel across all four institutional identities.

The Challenge

Four institution sites that needed to act like one platform.

IVCCD is unique among Iowa community college districts because it operates two separate community colleges, a business and community solutions arm, and a satellite center under one district. Each entity has its own web presence with its own audience: Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Marshalltown Community College, Iowa Valley Business and Community Solutions, and Iowa Valley Grinnell.

The district wanted these four sites to operate as a coherent platform rather than four disconnected installations. Content team members across the colleges needed a fully editable front end where they could update pages without developer support. Custom design templates needed to translate cleanly into a page builder. Common modules needed to live in one place and be reusable across the network.

Beyond the structural ask, two specific automation needs surfaced: events from a separate event website needed to flow into the WordPress sites automatically rather than being re-entered, and staff directory data living in a CSV file needed to be available as a searchable WordPress post type across the institutional sites.

What IVCCD needed

Fully editable front end based on a custom design template

Centralized data and design modules in the main network site, reusable across subsites

Event data integrated into WordPress via Event Calendar Pro

Staff directory auto-synced from a CSV file into a searchable WordPress post type

A multisite architecture that lets four sites operate as one platform

The Solution

WordPress Multisite, Beaver Builder, and automated content pipelines.

eWay built the IVCCD digital presence as a single WordPress Multisite installation that serves four sites: Ellsworth Community College, Marshalltown Community College, Iowa Valley Business and Community Solutions, and Iowa Valley Grinnell. Beaver Builder provides the page editing experience, with the client's custom design elements implemented as reusable Builder modules. Two automation pipelines handle event ingestion and staff directory syncing in the background.

The Outcome

Four sites, one platform, content that keeps itself current.

Four sites managed as one platform

WordPress Multisite lets the district operate Ellsworth, Marshalltown, Business and Community Solutions, and Grinnell from a single installation. Plugins, themes, and modules are shared across the network rather than duplicated four times, and updates apply network-wide.

Editorial independence on every site

Beaver Builder gives the content team across all four sites a fully editable front end. Each site's editors update pages, layouts, and components without developer involvement.

Centralized modules, faster authoring

Customized Builder modules live in the main network site. The other subsites use them directly. The content team builds new pages from a shared set of pre-made elements rather than rebuilding each one from scratch.

Automation that keeps content current

Events flow from the district's separate event website into WordPress automatically through the RSS plugin. Staff directory data syncs from CSV via a server-side cron job. Both pipelines remove manual entry from the editorial calendar entirely.

IVCCD's four web properties now run on one WordPress Multisite platform with shared modules, automated content pipelines, and fully editable front ends across every site. The four institutions maintain their distinct identities while sharing the operational backbone that keeps the platform efficient and current.

Common questions about this engagement

What buyers ask before engaging us on a project like Iowa Valley Community College District

What does WordPress Multisite mean for the four sites?

Multisite is a WordPress feature that lets a single installation host multiple sites, each with its own URL, content, and editorial team. The four IVCCD sites share plugins, themes, and the WordPress core itself, but each site has its own content and identity. Updates and security patches apply network-wide rather than four separate times. New sites can be added to the network with minimal additional infrastructure.

How does the staff directory CSV sync work?

A server-side cron job runs on a defined schedule. It reads the CSV file, parses the staff directory entries, and writes them into a WordPress post type. The post type is configured to be searchable on the front end so visitors can find staff by name, department, or other attributes. The pipeline runs in the background without requiring any manual action from the content team.

How are events pulled from the separate event website?

A custom plugin reads the RSS feed published by the district's event website and inserts the entries into Event Calendar Pro as WordPress events. The events appear on the WordPress sites alongside other content automatically rather than requiring duplicate entry. The plugin runs continuously so new events show up shortly after they are published on the source system.

Why use Beaver Builder for page editing?

Beaver Builder is a WordPress page builder that lets editors construct pages from a library of pre-made modules. The client's custom design templates were translated into Beaver Builder modules so the editorial team can build new pages from those design-system elements without writing HTML or CSS. Storing the customized modules in the main network site lets all four subsites use them directly, keeping the design language consistent across the network.

What does eWay actually own day-to-day?

eWay hosts and operates the WordPress Multisite environment, the custom plugin for event ingestion, the cron-driven CSV sync, and the custom Beaver Builder modules. WordPress core updates, plugin updates, and security patches are handled by the eWay team. The district's content teams across the four sites continue to author and publish through Beaver Builder without operational maintenance burden.
