What is Microsoft Azure Cloud?

Since the advent of the first computer in the 1930s, it was evident that mankind was on the verge of an era of great technological prowess. Today, 90 years later, we are inundated with data feeds from news sites, blogs, chat platforms, social media and the entire world wide web. So, where does all the processing power and data storage running the web come from?

With the rise of the internet came high bandwidth internet connectivity. The dominance of mainframe computers of the 70s and 80s gave way to distributed computing with business and personal tasks being performed by a personal(desktop/laptop) computer connected to the internet via a browser, offloading the compute intensive tasks to multiple connected servers hosted by a service provider. Thus, cloud computing (as we know it today) was born and went on the revolutionize the way we work, play and interact with each other. How relevant is the cloud to businesses today? In the United States alone, cloud spending is expected to exceed $500 billion by 2020 and 73% of CIOs are ready to embrace a “cloud first” strategy in 2018.

In the cloud computing space, Microsoft is one of the top service vendors with its Azure Platform(formerly known as Windows Azure) having an impressive 13% market share. Over 90% of Forture 500 companies use Microsoft Azure services. So, when did it all start? Azure was announced in 2008 during the Professional Developers Conference starting with five key categories of services – Windows Azure for compute, storage and networking; Microsoft SQL Services for databases; Microsoft .NET Services for developers; Live Services for file sharing; and Microsoft SharePoint Services and Microsoft Dynamics CRM Services SaaS offerings. Microsoft went to formally launch commercial services in February 2010. In the years that followed, Microsoft even embraced open source by adding support for Linux services, something that would have been unthinkable for a company like Microsoft but has taken off in a big way outpacing Windows Server as an operating system of choice on the Azure platform.

The Role of Microsoft Cloud Solution Provider

Where does Azure Cloud fit in the Microsoft scheme of things? Microsoft has just registered a 93% YoY growth in its cloud business in the latest quarter following a 98% growth in the previous quarter. How did Microsoft register such impressive numbers and gain the second position in Cloud Computing space? Through consulting and technology partners – teams that ease the transition from the conventional on-premise setup to the secure, compliant, and scalable cloud platform. Microsoft has been heavily investing in its partner programs including the fast-growing Cloud Solution Provider to grow its cloud business.

“Company’s recent organizational changes and partner programs updates that have helped the company get closer to its partners, is also to credit for its record cloud growth.” Said Gavriella Schuster, Corporate Vice president, Worldwide Partner Group, at Microsoft.

The Azure migration initiative, a program that allows partners to offer extended services for on-premise customers to migrate to the cloud has been a major focus for Microsoft and will be a “tremendous” opportunity for partners this year, Schuster said.

eWay Corp has created a niche in the field of IT Infrastructure Management, with over 12 years’ experience in end-to-end design, deployment and management of operating systems, applications and services with around-the-clock support and monitoring. It was a natural fit for us to work with Microsoft in delivering their Azure service offerings to our customers. Having worked on the Azure platform for over 5 years we have now been offered the Cloud Service Provider recognition. eWay Corp is a certified Consulting Partner for Microsoft Azure. What’s in it for your business?

Conventionally, companies used their own server hardware to host their web, email or application services. That gave them a greater level of control but involved a substantial capital expenditure at the very start. They would need to buy the hardware, license the software, then pay a professional to get it up and running for them. Then they would need to invest in a Systems Administrator to maintain it for them, apply patches and updates and ensure the environment was secure from threats.

But with cloud you do not need to setup any internal infrastructure at all. There is no capital expense on the hardware, the software licensing is built into the service charge and you get virtualized servers that do the same thing your on-premise setup did, on a pay per use model. Plus, you have the ability to scale the services up or down without worrying about adding or removing CPUs, memory or disks. You have eliminated the purchase cost and cost of hiring someone to maintain the system for you.

What you pay for is a usage charge for a large pool of resources such as web servers, database servers, firewalls, file storage servers, networks etc. Pay for what you need and keep adding as your business grows. With Azure you have the ability to choose between various service models. You can go for IaaS(Infrastructure-as-a-Service) which includes virtualized servers, networks, firewalls, PaaS(Platform-as-a-Service) which includes but is not limited to Windows Cloud Service, SQL Azure Database or SaaS(Software as a service) which includes Office 365, Sharepoint and Dynamics 365.

Let’s look at the benefits on using such services from Azure.

1. Agility

Add or scale services with a click. Services are provisioned within minutes and you can scale these services up and down as per need without re-configuring the entire setup.

2. Costs

The only costs incurred will be towards migrating your existing workloads to Azure. If you are setting them up from scratch then your charges include everything you will need including compute, memory, disk space, power, network, security and licensing.

3. Managed Services

Majority of the services are managed by Azure staff, so you can focus on running your business. You can involve a Microsoft Partner to set it all up for you.

4. Disasters

Microsoft has a disaster recovery plan built into each offering. You don’t ever have to worry about losing data due to fire or theft since everything is stored in the cloud. Data can be automatically replicated across multiple geographically diverse data centers for greater redundancy.

5. Remote Work

Azure enables your workers to work remotely by ensuring services are always available using its own distributed cloud network.

6. Security & Compliance

Microsoft has the best track record in offering secure and compliant platform of services to its customers. It leads the industry in establishing clear security and privacy requirements and then consistently meeting these requirements.

Other Benefits

  • No separate agreements required for licensing software.
  • No upfront commitment for any service. Pay for services as you consume.
  • You don’t have to negotiate with different partners for services and licensing.
  • One consolidated invoice for all services and support.
